Introduction

Ortel Communications Ltd. is in the business of providing convergence related telecom and broadcast services to customers in India and can be described as a “Broadband Access Network Operator and Service Provider". We are the only Triple Play (Data, Voice & Video) Service Provider in the State of Orissa. We are operating on Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) broadband communications networks in Orissa to provide High Speed Internet Access, Cable Television and Internet Telephony Services. Our network is fully operational in the cities of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela, Puri, Paradip, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Balasore, Angul and Khurda. We are in the process of expanding our operations to other cities like Jharsuguda, Rayagada, Jeypore, Baripada and Bargarh  etc. shortly.

Over the years, Ortel has grown up to this standard under the dynamic leadership of its Promoter-Director Mrs. Jagi Mangat Panda. Mrs. Panda belongs to the well-established Panda Family of Orissa, promoters of the IMFA group of companies, the leading private sector group in Orissa with interests in Smelters, Power Generation, Coal and Chromite Mining.

When the telecom revolution was taking place in the country in mid-nineties and Indian telecom companies were planning of investing & establishing expensive telecom networks, Mr Jay Panda, husband of Mrs. Jagi Mangat Panda and the Non-Executive Chairman of Ortel, had already drawn up a plan to bring a complete paradigm shift and build a packet switching based HFC network that can cater to all communication related services including voice at a substantially cheaper price in the State of Orissa. Mr. Panda is a dual degree holder in Management and Engineering from USA and a sitting member of Rajya Sabha.

While Mr. Panda has helped provide strategic & technological direction to Ortel, Mrs. Panda was completely hands on in promoting & building Ortel from scratch. Her able leadership has proved to be instrumental in carrying out the vision of Mr. Panda forward, which has transformed Ortel into one of the best private sector enterprises in the State.

A leading internationally reputed venture capital firm, through its Mauritius based subsidiary South Asia Regional Fund (SARF), has investment interests in Ortel and been playing a very active and cooperative role at Ortel's board level in shaping up key strategies of the company.

FCL : An Overseas Corporate Body (OCB) incorporated in Bahamas & promoted by NRI friends of our promoter, has investment interests in Ortel and is widely experienced in the telecom sector both in India & worldwide.

OSEDC : The nodal agency for electronics industries for the State Government of Orissa and responsible for expediting/providing infrastructural and regulatory support to IT industries, has played an important role in helping Ortel acquire its rights of way through several changes of government in the state.

IPICOL : The premier Government of Orissa Financial Institution has supported Ortel by providing term loans for project expansion at Bhubaneswar & Cuttack.

SREI : A leading infrastructure/equipment financier in India, has provided several tranches of equipment finance, debt and equity to Ortel over the years.

KARNATAKA BANK LIMITED (KBL) : Mangalore based leading 'A' class scheduled commercial bank in India provides finance support to Ortel for project expansion.

   Our Market

Bhubaneswar - the state capital of Orissa (famous for its vast natural resources), is today one of the fastest growing cities in India. It is one of the modern & growing cities in the country with plenty of green belts around, good amenities and virtually devoid of power shortage. The city, with its increasing cosmopolitan population and well designed facilities, has drawn  many of India's large manufacturing companies to establish their offices here. Also, it has been highly successful in drawing the attention of large multi national companies for setting up their regional offices, taking advantage of the large amount of foreign direct investments pouring into the state. The city is growing exponentially with the more & more domestic as well as foreign companies coming into the state with billions of dollars of investment.
Cuttack - located only 22 k.m. away from Bhubaneswar is regarded as the commercial capital of Orissa. Although a traditional Indian city, it has a strong economy of its own. Today, the cosmopolitan population in Cuttack & Bhubaneswar is a thriving and bustling urban group witnessing significant growth in terms of their earnings, living style, food habits, etc. The twin cities together contribute significantly to the state's GDP. Similarly, the port city of Paradip bears significance with many Indian as well as foreign steel companies planning to set up their manufacturing units in the proximity. The holy city of Puri, famous worldover for the Lord Jagannath Temple & the Car Festival, also bears a special importance for us to operate. The steel city Rourkela is one of the most industrialised areas of the state and has always been of great importance to us. Having extended our services recently to Sambalpur - the western commercial hub of the state, geographically we have tried to encash the opportunity of covering a sizable part of our state. The lush green Angul having the location advantage and industrial development is creating a positive environment for building CATV and DATA Network. 3 PSUs (NALCO, M.C.L, N.T.P.C ) and 2 large scale industry  (T.S.T.P, F.C.I), are providing a large scale of direct and indirect employment So we can expect that we will be to get a good consumer base. The major commercial hub Berhampur of South Orissa, is a convenient base point for development of CATV network. As the population and per capita income is high, there is a great potential for CATV and DATA market. One of the major industrial hub Balasore has got its driving factor for the growth is mainly due to the presence of industries like Birla tyres, Ispat Alloys, Emami, Orissa Plastics and Eastern Cylinders etc. which has created enough direct and indirect employment opportunities thereby improving the economic condition of the city and subsequently increases the paying capacity of the people. The district headquarter Khurda is valuable with its historical and economical factor, which attracted us to enter.

SkyView Home Cable
We provide Cable TV service under the brand 'SkyView Home Cable', which is the dominant service provider in this segment and the largest MSO with over 90% market share to its credit. Our long term agreement with the State Electricity Grid has provided us with a rare strength - the legal right to use the Grid's poles for drawing our HFC cable both inside and between cities. Contrary to the neighbourhood cable operator, SkyView promises and delivers crystal clear signal quality in line with world-class networks. Our adherence to standards and quality of service has made us a household name in many parts of Orissa.

Data Services
We were the first private sector company in India to have been granted an ISP(Internet Service Provider) license by the Government of India in the year 1998. Our Data Services are being marketed under the brand "Ortel Broadband Services". After the launch of DOCSIS 2.0 Broadband Cable Modem Service, we are currently providing internet service through cable modem to our customers in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar & Cuttack and Rourkela. In fact, we are the first in South Asia to introduce DOCSIS 2.0 Broadband Cable Modem Service. Our highly competitive schemes and quality of services have made us popular as one of the fastest growing broadband internet service providers in Orissa. Voice Services
Our Internet Telephony Service is the latest addition to our services which is being provided to our customers in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack at present. We are currently undertaking the "Pilot Project for Internet Telephony Services" in these cities with an aim to provide telephony services in Orissa at a much cheaper rate than that of the traditional telephony service providers. This service is due to be commercialised soon.
